executive coaching FAQs

  • What is executive coaching?

Executive coaching is a collaboration between coach and client. Clients are typically seasoned professionals who are thinking deeply about what’s next on their professional journey. We will work together to refine your broadly stated desires into specific and actionable goals. The agenda is yours — I am not here to say what’s right or wrong but rather to guide you on the path. Once we have established a direction, coaching will help keep you moving in that direction. Coaching has been shown to establish new neural pathways to support sustained change.

  • how do we get started?

You will reach out to schedule a free introductory consultation. At that meeting, we will get to know each other a bit — you will share why you are seeking out coaching and I will share a bit about my approach. If it’s a match, we will then schedule our first session. I will send you a questionnaire so you can reflect a bit about what you want out of the coaching and so I can get to you you a bit more. In our first couple of sessions, we will explore where you are now and where you want to go. Additionally, we will get clear on what’s important to you (your values) and clearly delineate what you want to focus on in the coaching (the “agenda”).

  • when and where will we meet?

Generally, we will meet twice a month for an hour. We will meet over Zoom or in person if you are in NYC or the Hudson Valley.

Note that you are welcome to reach out between sessions if something comes up where you could use some support.

You will schedule our time together using the Ongoing Coaching scheduling link.

  • What's a typical coaching session like?

We will spend a few minutes catching up on what’s been going on since we last met (share successes, identify new challenges, etc.). Then we will hone in on your specific focus for the session while keeping your bigger agenda in sights as well.

Then I will ask a LOT of questions. These questions are designed to help you consider new perspectives and possibilities and let go of narratives that are no longer serving you.

At the end of the session, you will share what you have learned in the session and we will make a plan together to capture that learning.

  • what happens between sessions?

At the end of each session, we will decide on some “fieldwork” for you. This may be an action item or a more reflective thought process around a particular question. If it’s supportive for your work, I will assign readings, podcasts, etc. to deepen the work.

Similar to meditation (which also establishes new neural pathways), the time spent in the session is the catalyst. The longitudinal aspect of the work, i.e. integrating the learning into your life, is where change happens.

Prior to your next session, I will send you some prompts for reflection.

  • how is coaching different from consulting or therapy?

Coaching is a forward looking and the client drives the work. With consulting, the consultant listens and then drives the work by making specific recommendations. There are times that you may want guidance around navigating an issue about which I have direct experience. In that case, I will clearly say “I am taking off my coaching hat” and provide more consultative direction.

With therapy, there’s a focus on looking back at your personal history and how it got you where you are today. Therapists are trained to help with serious mental health issues. If you are facing issues around addiction, trauma, chronic depression or anxiety, or other mental health challenges, or have suicidal thoughts, therapy is the appropriate modality. Coaches are not trained to respond professionally to this set of issues and will refer these clients out to a trained psychologist.
